Obesity Crisis in America

Obesity

Obesity Crisis in America

Americans are still fat and getting fatter. However, we have slowed down are rate. For 2/3 of states, more than a quarter of adults are obese according to the Trust for America’s Health. To be obese, one must exceed a BMI of 30.

The largest offender of obesity is the southern United States. Mississippi is the fattest state in union. Over a third of people in Mississippi are considered to be obese. Of the top ten states with highest rates obesity, eight of the states belonged to the south. Adding to the trouble, the south has a high rate of diabetes and hypertension. The region is also known for having low amounts to physical activity.

However, exercise does not always correlate with exercise. This comes as a big surprise. While most of the states that have high obesity rates also have high inactivity rates, there are some exceptions. New Jersey ranks high inactivity but has a low rate of obesity.

There were only four states that landed on both the least obese and most active lists: Hawaii, Utah, Vermont, and Colorado. These results indicate lack of exercise is not the only factor contributing to the trend.

Schools are working towards reducing obesity in children. Nineteen states require nutritional standards of school food to be above what is required federally. The requirements are not just for lunch but for snacks and drinks sold in machines. Thirty states have enacted a snack tax to reduce unhealthy eating. Researchers praise these steps saying habits learned in school carry on throughout adult life. The main reason kids are overweight though is overeating.

While food is improving, kids still need to exercise more. More than two thirds of kids ages 6 to 17 do not participate in vigorous form of exercise such as playing a sport.

Vigorous exercise is defined as any 20 minute activity that causes heavy breathing and sweat. Since exercise is important for developing kids, these statistics are a cause for concern.

With the economy struggling, obesity rates are likely to grow. Nutritious foods are more expensive, and people have difficulty affording those foods. Stress also leads to people stopping their physical activity.

Obesity Surgical Treatment

Do you know the rate of obesity patients are increasing day by day in United States. The number of obesity patients are getting doubled and tripled year by year. Statistical report shows that the death rate for obese people is getting higher. So what is the solution for obesity treatment, how can we manage obesity?

Before learning more on obesity treatment one should know

What does obesity mean?

When can we say he/she is suffering from obesity?

What are the causes of obesity?

What are the types of obesity?

Obesity

Obesity is defined as excess total body fat which results from more calorie intake that exceeds energy usage and is considered as a serious disease which may require proper treatment.

One can get to know that he/she is obese with Body Mass Index value (Body Mass Index helps to measure body fat based on height and weight). You can check your BMI value using a BMI calculator

Though there are more causes for obesity the main causes are eating habits and your inherited genes.

How can obesity be treated? Obesity can be treated with self care at early stages. Medications or surgery may be required during extreme stages. The treatment you may require depends on health risks for other diseases and the causes for your obesity.

]]>

Self care:

Obesity patients can follow proper diet to reduce their calories (consultation with diet physician is required). Regular exercise can result in weight loss. Drug treatment can be done for patients having BMI value between 27 and 30.

Obesity treatment for extreme stages – Obesity weight loss surgery is considered as the last resort to treat morbid obesity and super obesity.

There are more surgical options available.

Biliopancreatic diversion

In this surgery weight loss is achieved by reducing the absorption of fat. 2/3 rd of the stomach is removed and remaining small stomach pouch is connected to the final segment of the small intestine which reduces fat absorption. This procedure changes the normal process of digestion. Since this procedure is little complex weight loss surgery only experienced bariatric weight loss surgeons perform Biliopancreatic diversion surgery

Tube gastrectomy also called as sleeve gasterctomy is an irreversible weight loss surgery in which lateral 2/3rds of the stomach is removed using a stapling device leaving a stomach tube instead of stomach sack. This surgery is also called as stomach stapling surgery. This obesity surgery can be done with laparoscopic methods

Roux En Y Gastric bypass

In this procedure a small stomach pouch is created (which reduces food intake) and is connected with the Y shaped tube of the small intestine (bypassing the duodenum and jejunum). This bypass is done to reduce the calorie intake

Lap band surgery is known for its minimally invasive approach and is the onlly reversible weight loss surgery. In this obesity surgery a hollow band is placed around the upper end of the stomach which creates a small pouch and a narrow passage. This band is inflated with a salt solution and is adjustable (can be tightened or loosened based on the need).

Other than these surgeries there is a non-surgical which is widely accepted by obesity patients Bioenterics Intragastric Balloon

Obese Children-Stop The Epidemic

Obesity

Obese Children-Stop The Epidemic

Article by Trevor Dalley

It’s estimated that obese children make up between 5 and 25 percent of all children in the United States. That’s a staggering number of severely overweight kids. And it’s frightening, consider that the number of obese children keeps rising.

Obese children are unfortunately at a higher risk for illness and disease than kids who aren’t overweight. While an obese child close weight and grow up to be a normal weight adult, the likelihood of obese kids growing up to be overweight and obese adults is pretty high.

Being obese as a kid raises the risk of developing Type II diabetes, which in most cases is preventable with a healthy diet and good exercise habits. It also increases the risk of adult heart disease, joint problems and high blood pressure.

There’s even a special type of high blood pressure heavy kids get. It’s referred to as pediatric hypertension. This is when a child’s blood pressure is too high, and it’s usually caused by the child being obese.

Obese kids face serious health consequences from their heavy childhoods. So what can be done to prevent and reverse childhood obesity? To learn how to stop it, it can help for you to see what causes it in the first place.

A child’s risk of becoming obese is greatly elevated if he or she has obese parents. If both parents are obese the risk is very high. With one obese parent the risk is elevated but not as high as if both parents are very heavy.

This is a factor because of the obvious eating patterns within the family. If both parents are obese, they’re probably not setting a good example as far as nutrition and exercises.

And since the child will be served the meals that the adults eat, it’s easy to see how it could be easy for a child to gain weight.

And heredity does play a role. While heredity can’t in itself make a child fat, if many family members had weight issues it can show a natural predisposition toward gaining weight and having those related health problems.

Obese children also spend a lot of hours each week doing passive activities instead of actively playing and getting exercise. Watching television seems to be the biggest offender with heavy kids often spending several hours each day just watching television.

Factor in time spent playing video games and on the Internet, and there’s not much time left for physical activities. The new breed of video games that get people up and moving around may help, but it’s hard to counteract several hours of sitting still watching television each day.

For obese kids, the best thing parents can do is set good examples. Serving healthy, nutritious meals while watching things like calories and carbs is important.

Scheduling family activities that keep everyone physically active and making fitness priority can set the stage for healthier kids. Obese children need adult guidance to help them make healthier lifestyle choices and lose weight to protect their future health and happiness. www.diabetestype2-diet.com

Causes Of Childhood Obesity

Obesity

Causes Of Childhood Obesity
Childhood obesity, what was once shocking and disturbing has now become a fact of life, as adult obesity increased childhood obesity is growing and rapidly increasing. The numbers present a sad reality, one of five children is considered overweight, and this tendency only increases with time, childhood obesity is increasing in different ethnic groups, in both genders and all across the world.

There are numerous causes of childhood obesity. The main cause is eating more calories than the body burns through physical activity. Child obesity is often a result of nutritional, psychological, physiological, and family factors.

It is commonly known that many obese children have obese parents. This may be due to genetic reasons but most times it is a result of the parenting lifestyles.Somehoe parents are also reasponsible for their child’s obesity as keeping in touch with child and giving them a healthy diet is the responsibility of parents.

Lack of regular exercise is a factor that has contributed to this being one of the causes of childhood obesity. Children who spend a lot of time watching TV programs will have a greater risks of child obesity than those who go outside playing or sporting.

Be mindful that if an obese child develops diabetes during childhood, he or she is more likely to live a shorter life span as compared to those without diabetes. This is because diabetes is likely to build up kidney failure or heart disease or other associated effects of diabetes such as blindness.

Some study say that about 10% of people that are mildly obese was cause by psychological or stress problems. Some children have a difficult time dealing with stress so they use food as a comfort when they feel, and many children are prone to eating in response to negative emotions like being bored, feeling anxious or being angry.

They are way too young to have to worry about weight control issues at such a young age. I hope to give you, the parent, some insight on preventing this issue from exploding any further out of control, as there are many risks of childhood obesity in their coming life.

No more donuts for breakfast. Make donuts and other sweets an occasional treat.Get rid of the soda pop. Look at the calories and sugar information on one can of soda. Seriously, take a look: 100 to 200 calories per can!

Parents please watch your kids and teens actions and habits. Do not let them become couch potatoes that watch TV and play video games for hours of the day.If your kids are not too fond of having plenty of fruits and vegetables in their diet then slowly introduce it in their meals; cook with vegetables and offer fruits as snacks.

Additionally involve your family in more exercise. Take a walk together on a daily basis and create chores that require physical activity such as: taking the dog for a walk, taking out the trash, or even cleaning their room.

Your the parent and in charge not your child. This means you’re responsible for your children’s healthy eating patterns.

Psychological Effects of Teen Obesity

Obesity

Psychological Effects of Teen Obesity

It only seems natural to consider the psychological effects of teen obesity and how it is affecting our youth. Not too long ago it would be unheard of to be having this discussion. The child obesity issue worldwide has received so much attention it seems appropriate to consider what is going on in their head. It’s what we don’t see in our children that is of most concern. We can easily see their day to day routines but what underlining psychological effects of teen obesity don’t we see?

It has been perceived that young children who are obese will grow out of it or they are just carrying “baby fat”. In some cases this is true and they do grow out of it, but what if they don’t. It’s a known fact that kids can be mean and bully. Children who are teased about their weight are more apt to have and symptons of depression. Everyone wants to have friends but sometimes the obese teen feels isolated and lonely. Their self esteem is low and they use food as their comfort zone, which is usually high in fat, sugar, and calories. The isolation makes them less active so exercise is compromised. Because of peer pressure the psychological effects of teen obesity affects their overall health which can lead to more serious medical problems. The teen years are all about growing up, being more independent, and socialization. Peer pressure in teenagers is a major issue whether they have a weight problem or not , which is why teasing obese teens can be psychologically devastating.

]]>

Peer pressure is the hub of the psychological effects of teen obesity. The spin off is problems in school and missing too much school. Obese teens are absent from school more often than non obese teens. Some will miss school or skip classes to avoid ridicule and others due to medical complications associated with being obese. Behavioral and learning problems develop because they feel Obese teens have an equal right to education as non obese teens but the taunting effects them emotionally and it’s easier to avoid than confront. They are missing out on their education because of the psychological effects of teen obesity.

It appears clear that the psychological effects of teen obesity have the potential to be carried into adulthood. Including in some cases anxiety and obsessive compulsive behavior. although it doesn’t have to be this way. Once the weight problem is cured and their physical appearance has improved; their self esteem and body image will be restored. We must be careful not to ignore the psychological effects of teen obesity that they may still have bottled up inside.

Triggers To Watch For

Your obese teen has less energy or interests and is hesitant to participate in social relationships or other activities;

Your obese teen appears increasingly sad, lonely, angry or withdrawn.

Your obese teen has few friends.

Your obese teen has thoughts of causing harm to him/herself or others.

Your obese teen is obsessed with eating.

Your obese teen sleeps too much or not enough.

Your obese teen is reluctant to go to school.

There are steps that parents can do to help ease the psychological stress that results from teen obesity. Many times teens over eat because they are depressed. Openly communicating with your obese child about the problem will allow you to work a plan that is attainable. The good news is with proper nutrition, exercise, and a real good diet plan teens can overcome obesity and live a full normal life.

Obesity And Male Infertility, Two Modern Societies Problems

Obesity

Obesity And Male Infertility, Two Modern Societies Problems

While millions of people are slowly dying of hunger, modern societies have to face new challenges directly linked to our way of life. Bad nutritional habits, stress, junk food and other factors contribute day after day to a dramatic explosion of obesity. But how can the obesity of today, combined with an aging population have a direct impact on the next children generation? Although no real study has ever been performed on this subject, science already proved us that obesity can have negative impacts on the sexual life and on the sperm quality.

Firstly, we should remember how body does secrete the testosterone. Testosterone is secreted in the testes, in the Leydig cells. This secretion only happens with the stimulation of the LH hormone – LH hormone being secreted by the pituitary gland.  Testosterone is necessary to the fabrication of spermatozoids, the development of the male sexual organs and male sexual secondary characteristics. This hormonal process can only happen to active people, doing regular physical efforts. This is where the problem lies : obese people often tend to reduce physical efforts and this is why a decrease in testosterone production is clearly noticed in people suffering from overweight. This implies that obese people are less interested in sex than before.

Secondly, let’s combine this problem with the female hormone, estrogen, naturally secreted in fat cells, and present in chemical component of common products; this makes the perfect infertility bomb. Note : obesity and pollution by estrogen like substances are only two factors explaining the rise of male infertility. Many other causes exist.

Zinc. Many people just think zinc is solely a metal. They are right, but zinc also plays an important role in general as well as sexual health. Zinc, found in e.g. oysters and nuts, enters the body through the food. Zinc allows you to keep your hair, an healthy skin and body tissues, and also maintains the motility and quality of sperm. Sadly, overweight people, with unbalanced diets, leave out many aliments containing zinc. That is why a decrease in quality of sperm is commonly linked to a zinc deficit. A rich zinc diet should contain: oysters, sea shells, nuts, seeds, beans and also meat and poultry.

There are ways to fight obesity, with the help of doctors and nutritionists, with good nutritional habits and herbal supplements that can help overweight people to get through with their diet. To fight obesity, herbal supplements like Hoodia Gordonii can be used. And to maintain the quality and motility of sperm, a daily supply of zinc is necessary. All these herbal supplements and products can be easily found and purchased on the internet nowadays.

Conclusion: obesity and male infertility are two new problems that modern societies must fight. Even if no in depth study has been conducted, scientists proved us there is a link between these two problems. With the help of science, these problems can be solved, provided that obese people adapt their nutritional habits.

Childhood Obesity Facts

Childhood Obesity Facts

Article by Bart Allison

As America continues to depend so much on science and technology to make life easier and more convenient, it becomes a challenge for majority of its people to actually move. Our sedentary lifestyles have made us a nation of couch potatoes. And the more we continue to succumb to the pressures of work so largely dependent on the ever-powerful computer, the more we get glued to our seats and grow rounder bellies in the process. As we strive to balance the demands of school, career and family, we become so dependent on boxed breakfasts, fast food lunches and pre-packaged dinners. We hardly have time to exercise. As a result, more and more Americans are getting overweight and obese.Despite the growing number of obesity-related illnesses, it seems that a great number of us don’t really comprehend the price of obesity. It is a hefty sum that affects our physical, social, mental, emotional and cultural life that everyone should be concerned about. But in case we need constant reminding of the huge price of obesity, here’s the lowdown:1. Obesity predisposes an individual to physical illness. When you are obese, you are more prone to heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and stroke.2. Obesity triggers psychological issues. A person who is obese suffers from self-esteem and self-confidence problems. The fatter a person gets, the more prone he or she is to depression, impaired body image and mood changes.3. Obese people stay longer in the hospital. A study conducted by Purdue University revealed that obese people stay an average of one to one-and-half days longer in the hospital due to disease. Furthermore, the longer the length of time a person has become obese, the longer will his or her hospital stay be.4. The morbidly obese pay almost two times as much for their healthcare costs compared to people of normal weight. This is according to a survey conducted by the University of Cincinnati.5. Obese people have a hard time looking for clothes that fit. Shopping becomes a chore and often, a depressing thought.6. Obesity affects productivity. Obese people have to constantly battle their health issues and keep on seeing their doctors, so they usually end up getting more absences compared to those who have healthy weights.7. Obesity affects relationships. Those who are obese often cannot understand why their partners look for someone else. Ironically, the answer is in those love handles. They’re not really lovable, after all.8. Obesity sets a bad example to our children. When parents are obese, children will most likely be obese. Young people who are obese now also get more prone to the diseases associated with being on the heavy side now and even when they grow older.9. Obesity halts dreams and aspirations. Those who have always wanted to follow a military career or a life of glamour and beauty often find that these professions do not look kindly on those who cannot pass physical tests or can’t fit on screen, literally and figuratively.10. Obesity causes premature deaths. The more obese a person gets, the more he or she is at risk for obesity-related diseases. In many cases, a heart attack prematurely ends a life, leaving families and children behind. This is the major price of obesity.

Obesity Linked to Your Eating Habits

Obesity

Obesity Linked to Your Eating Habits

Obesity is the condition that is very closely associated with the eating habits. Excessive intake of the fats and carbohydrates on the regular basis makes the person prone to the obesity. The person is said to be obese when the excessive deposition of the fats in the body is noted and these fats starts protruding outside the limit and puts the harmful impact on other body parts.

It is really shocking, but true that about 30% of the people from all over the world are facing the problem of the obesity and remember the maximum population from these is from the developed nations. Obesity has become an unwelcome guest of many homes in United States. Many adolescents are facing the problem of obesity due to their excessive eating habits.

A research study conducted by the University of Texas has clearly proved that people who eat more are more prone to the obesity. The people who eat more are generally over-weight, which makes them inactive. This result in less consumption of the body fats and the excessive fats gets accumulated in the body, which causes obesity.

The person whose BMI is more than 25 should pay a more attention towards their diet become they are on the verge of suffering with the obesity. Specifically the food items that are rich in the fats and carbohydrates must be limited from the diet. But, please don’t remove them completely from your diet because it may be unhealthy. It would be best if you can take the advice of dietician on this.

Once the person gets prone to the obesity then his overall health status gets declined, which makes him prone to the various other health problems like diabetes, heart problems, blood pressure, liver disorders, asthma, and many more. Thence, it is always better to stay away from the obesity rather than suffering with it. So go for a walk daily and eat the balanced diet in order to stay away from the obesity.
